V/H/S 2 is a movie that was released on January 19, 2013. The directors in order of when they appear are Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Eduardo Sanchez, Timo Tjahjanto, and Jason Eisener. I found this film on Netflix shortly after watching its predecessor V/H/S. It is a horror anthology that was met with hit or miss reviews. The hit or miss aspect coming from its multiple directors who all make a separate short film.
The film is basically four short horror movies in one ranging from aliens to satanic cultists. All the films are in first person, minus the blurry shaking camera that usually accompanies these types of films. The first story starts off when a couple of investigators are hired by a mother to find where her son disappeared to. The investigators end up breaking into the sons house to find the place practically abandoned. After a short search they find a single television set with piles of v/h/s's. They end up watching a couple for some clues as to the whereabouts of the son and that's where the other three horror movies come from.
V/H/S 2 is a refreshing horror experience for many reasons but I'll list just a few. First off you are constantly engaged because there is a new and radically different horror movie every thirty minutes. Secondly they make the first person camera actually work instead of hinder the movie. The final reason is the exclusion of common horror movie tropes.
V/H/S 2 is an extremely engaging movie. The fact that is has multiple directors for each section of the movie gives each part of the movie a unique style. This is also seen by the different ideas for each movie ranging from ghosts and zombies. The movies are also never too long and won't drag on for plot or jump scares. The different movies get through a story in about thirty minutes a piece. Despite the seemingly short time for a horror movie all the directors do an amazing job making a complete story. You never feel like there were more questions to be answered or that the movie ended because there was no time left.
The directors also incorporate an abundance of their own style to the movie. Take for example the section A Walk In The Park.
The director spins in a kind of comedic feel to his part of the movie.
Constantly having characters act slightly odd in situations. Also having
the zombie discover that he needs human flesh by having him chew on
various objects. My personal favorite is the zombie food scene when the
zombies stare and try to figure each other out.
Then you look at the section named Safe Haven. It has a completely different feel than the previous movie. Safe Haven has an extremely eerie feeling through out the entire film. The evil characters make you feel uncomfortable to be in their "facility". The whole movie conveys a sense of fear and a need to leave. This is the exact opposite of the slightly comedic feel of A Walk In The Park. So no matter how you prefer your horror films there will always be a new engaging movie every thirty minutes.
